In 2007 our founders Steve and Liz Jennings went to Kampala. Whilst there they met some inspirational local Ugandans who had begun a small mission teaching slum children and supporting their families. They returned home determined to help the children and families living in the slum community in Namuwongo and ‘Friends’ was born.

“We were inspired by the vision and commitment of the staff, and totally captivated by the children and horrified by their plight. We had to do something.”

Steve Jennings - Founder

Support started with the sponsorship of children in secondary education and then developed into fundraising for a school building. As the project continued to grow, ‘Friends’ began to finance a feeding programme to help the undernourished children receive a meal during their school day.

“The needs of the poor worldwide are overwhelming, but Friends of Namuwongo Community Foundation gives a focus to a small part of that need and at a scale that we can address.

The children of the slums have so little and are so appreciative for what Namuwongo Community Foundation can offer them.”

Because of your generous support, ‘Friends’ is able to provide a wonderful primary school and salaries for all of the Ugandan employees of the Foundation. It is also able to finance the education and training of some of the children as they progress through Secondary and Further Education. A social worker is employed to support the children and families in their homes and to work with the mothers so that the education the children receive is not wasted but is fully supported when they are at home.

This truly is an extraordinary project and one where we can all make such an effective difference. We truly hope you join us on our journey and help Namuwongo Community Foundation in its mission.

In the UK, Friends of Namuwongo Community Foundation is a registered charity which coordinates the raising of funds, provides support for the team in Namuwongo and ensures that the charity is run effectively. There is at least one self-funded trustee visit to the project annually.

Established in 2007, Friends of Namuwongo Community Foundation has a team of six trustees - Steve and Liz Jennings, Matthew and Nicola Brearley, John Miller and Sue Forward. Steve is Treasurer and Matthew is Chair of Trustees.

Our Uganda Team

Namuwongo Community Foundation (NCF) is an independent Non Government Organisation (NGO) that is registered in Uganda. It is staffed by an amazing team of local Ugandans and is governed by a Board Of Directors.

All of these people have a passion for improving the lives and welfare of the slum community whom they serve. The work of the Community Foundation not only ensures the smooth running of the school and its educational provision, it also provides social care, medical care, a cooked meal, financial aid, training opportunities, support and advice for micro-business start ups and so much more.

NCF is committed to seeing sustainable change in the local slum community and helping people to move out of abject poverty into a better life where they can sustain themselves and their families. We believe that the best way to do this is through education, which is at the heart of all that the foundation does.
